The debate surrounding Lionel Messi’s departure from Barcelona remains ongoing, and Joan Laporta has once again shared his version of the events.
Speaking on the Catalan programme ‘Café d’Idees,’ Laporta, a presidential candidate, addressed the emotional and controversial episodes related to the Argentine legend’s exit in 2021 and his unsuccessful comeback attempt in 2023.
Laporta admitted he was unable to prevent Messi’s move to Paris Saint-Germain in 2021, nor could he bring him back two years later. When asked whether Messi could still finish his career at Barcelona, Laporta clarified the 2023 situation: an attempt was made, but Messi preferred to go to Inter Miami for various reasons.
He stressed that it was Messi’s very respectable decision and did not want to sound like a critic. Laporta reflected on the mutual legacy shared between the club and its greatest-ever player: "Messi gave a lot to Barça and Barça gave a lot to Messi." In his view, Messi deserves a tribute match, which was impossible given how things turned out.
He added that Messi has been the best player in the world, worthy of a statue alongside Kubala, Cruyff, and Ronaldinho. However, their relationship became strained after the contract non-renewal. Laporta explained that the environment was not adverse to Messi going to PSG but that Barcelona’s finances could not support the return attempt. He believes there is always room for improvement, even in dire situations.
Additionally, Laporta touched on his current campaign and the club’s future, suggesting that coach Hansi Flick feels more comfortable if he continues as president, which became evident after a book presentation.
