Brazilian magazine Placar published an updated ranking of the 100 greatest footballers ever, based on a survey of 40 Brazilian and international journalists. Four Barcelona players—Lionel Messi (2nd), Diego Maradona (3rd), Johan Cruyff (4th), and Ronaldo Nazário (6th)—make up four of the six top spots.
The list is headed by the legendary Pelé from Santos. Other football icons also appear in the top 20, including Cristiano Ronaldo (5th), primarily known for his time at Real Madrid, alongside Zinedine Zidane, Ferenc Puskás, and Alfredo di Stéfano, who bolster Real Madrid’s presence. However, Barcelona leads as the club with the most players in the top 20, adding Ronaldinho, Romário, Andrés Iniesta, and Neymar to the list.
Placar notes that these rankings are evolving and reflect the voters’ emotional memory, allowing iconic figures like Garrincha to maintain their spots over time.
This ranking underscores Barcelona’s unique blend of top individual talent and team football that has solidified its special status in football history. The recognition confirms Barça’s role as a cradle for exceptional football stars.
