FC Barcelona has taken the initial step to expand its training stadium, Estadi Johan Cruyff. This week, club vice-president Josep Cubells and Espai Barça director Joan Centelles met with Sant Joan Despi’s mayor, Belen Garcia, to discuss plans to increase the stadium’s capacity from 6,000 to 10,000 spectators.
The project targets readiness for the 2027/28 season, when the first team will likely need an alternative home due to Camp Nou’s final remodeling phase, including roof installation. Although the renovation is expected to last four months post-2026/27 season, past delays prompted Barca to prepare a robust backup plan.
Estadi Johan Cruyff is the preferred alternative venue, offering a cost-effective solution compared to the more expensive Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys option. Meanwhile, Barcelona also considers starting the season with initial away games to mitigate scheduling risks related to construction.
First, the expansion enhances the club’s infrastructural resilience by ensuring flexibility during extensive Camp Nou renovations, reflecting the club’s strategic long-term developments.
Second, increasing capacity to 10,000 seats will improve fan experience and create a charged atmosphere, preserving strong ties between the team and supporters even while temporarily relocated.
Third, choosing Estadi Johan Cruyff as the temporary home reduces financial burdens, allowing funds to be allocated to other club priorities, including squad strengthening.
Overall, this expansion is more than a stadium upgrade; it’s a strategic move ensuring stability and match quality for upcoming seasons. Supporters should be ready for changes that will likely enhance the club’s infrastructure and competitiveness.
