The municipality of Sant Joan Despí, home to FC Barcelona’s Johan Cruyff Stadium, has expressed concerns about the club’s plan to expand the stadium capacity to 16,000. Mayor Belén García explained that such a scale is technically complex and conflicts with neighborhood dynamics due to proximity to other major institutions.

While open to remodeling the facility, the city council suggests a more modest capacity increase capped at approximately 10,000 spectators. The restrictions stem from transportation and mobility challenges, as increasing fan attendance would worsen local traffic and parking issues. The authorities emphasize prioritizing public transport and shuttle services to mitigate these effects.

Barcelona seeks expansion partly to host first-team matches during the ongoing Spotify Camp Nou renovation and to better accommodate its women’s and reserve teams. However, LaLiga had already made a temporary exception for Johan Cruyff Stadium’s capacity, unlikely to be repeated.

This limits the scope of Barça’s infrastructure development on site, impacting scheduling and financial strategies. Supporters should expect that some first-team matches during Camp Nou’s upgrade will remain elsewhere, and ticket revenue growth from the Johan Cruyff ground may be more restrained than initially expected.
