Barcelona captain Ronald Araujo was at the Ciutat Esportiva on Tuesday, despite the first team having a scheduled rest day.
The defender chose to train anyway, adding extra work as Barcelona enters the critical stretch of the season where margins are thinner and decisions tougher.
The 26-year-old has been rebuilding momentum since November, when he was sent off against Chelsea in the UEFA Champions League and subsequently took time off to address mental health struggles. This included trips to Jerusalem and Uruguay during the winter break before rejoining the squad.
His comeback has been gradual: a brief appearance in the Spanish Super Cup final against Real Madrid, short stints in Europe against Slavia Prague and Copenhagen, and a few minutes in La Liga. Earlier this month, he started in the Copa del Rey quarterfinal against Albacete, scoring Barcelona’s second goal to send them into the semifinals.
Araujo spoke openly about the significance of the match for his confidence and growth, emphasizing the importance of playing and winning finals. He also warmly embraced new head coach Hansi Flick, calling him like a father and praising his management of players.
The club’s reaction has been supportive, with Joan Laporta expressing satisfaction with the captain’s return and goal, and Gerard Martí also expressing happiness for him.
Practically, with Andreas Christensen sidelined and Pau Cubarsí and Eric García bearing heavy workloads, Araujo’s pace and physicality suit Barcelona’s defensive needs under Flick.
Although he has made mistakes in crucial moments leading to confidence issues, Araujo is working hard to re-establish himself as a top center-back. Flick hopes this will be the case.
