On matchday 24 of La Liga Barcelona lost 2–1 away to Girona and will finish the round in second place, two points behind the leaders. Barça dominated the first half and created numerous big chances but failed to convert them.

Raphinha missed a clear opportunity inside the box and later hit the post, while Lamine Yamal was played through one-on-one and also struck the post — by halftime Barcelona should have been leading by several goals but went in level. Hansi Flick made tactical tweaks that improved the team’s defensive structure: the offside trap worked, both full-backs were more conservative, and Dani Olmo operated as a true pivot alongside Frenkie de Jong.

Barcelona started the second half less sharp and began losing the ball in dangerous areas, allowing Girona to counter. Pau Cubarsí then headed home a cross from Jules Kounde to put Barça ahead. Two minutes later Thomas Lemar equalised and by the hour mark the hosts had levelled; Girona then dominated the game and generated more big chances. Barça were fortunate at times thanks to the offside flag and several outstanding saves from Joan Garcia.

Fran Beltrán scored from outside the box to complete Girona’s comeback. There was a possible foul on Jules Kounde in the build-up that neither the referee nor VAR acted on. In stoppage time Ronald Araujo missed a great chance from a Yamal cross, Robert Lewandowski had a goal correctly ruled out for offside, Frenkie de Jong went down in the box with no penalty given, and Joel Roca was shown a straight red for a horrific tackle on Yamal.

Barcelona pushed until the final whistle but could not find an equaliser. It is a painful defeat: after a dominant first half the second-half collapse is inexcusable, and both players and coaching staff must take responsibility and reflect.
