The King and Queen of Spain will attend the ceremony for the National Sports Awards covering 2023 and 2024, to be held on Wednesday at the Royal Palace of El Pardo in Madrid. The event will honour footballers Rodrigo Hernández and Aitana Bonmatí as well as athletes María Pérez and Álvaro Marín, recognised as the top sportspeople for the respective years.
Among other distinctions, Barcelona’s young talent Lamine Yamal is set to be named the revelation of 2024; the revelation award for 2023 will go to Álvaro Romero, who was junior world champion in snowboard cross (SBX) in Italy, achieved a podium at the Veysonnaz World Cup stage in Switzerland and competed at the Milan–Cortina Winter Olympics. The Spanish women’s football team will be awarded best team for 2023 following their World Cup triumph over England, while the 2024 team award will go to the women’s water polo team after their Olympic gold in Paris, a European silver in Eindhoven and a world bronze in Doha.

The Trofeo Comunidad Iberoamericana will honour Dominican sprinter Marileidy Paulino and Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade. Paulino became in 2023 the first athlete from her country to win an individual world title at age 20, taking the 400m crown, and a year later she secured Olympic gold in Paris 2024. Andrade collected four medals in Paris 2024: gold on floor, silver in the individual all-around and in vault, and bronze in the team competition.
The National Sports Awards have been granted by the Spanish government through the Consejo Superior de Deportes since 1982 to recognise individuals and organisations that have stood out in competition or in promoting sport during the year.
