Joao Cancelo Pushes for Barcelona Return Amid Financial Hurdles
Joao Cancelo remains determined to return to FC Barcelona despite ending his second loan spell on June 30.
The Portuguese full-back has returned to Saudi club Al Hilal, where he has one year left on his contract, but his primary goal is to transfer back to Spotify Camp Nou.
Barcelona’s sporting department is aware of Cancelo’s wish and has asked the player to remain patient while they explore possible solutions. The key obstacle remains Al Hilal’s financial demands: they paid just over €20 million to sign Cancelo and expect a fee exceeding €10 million, which Barcelona considers too high for a player with only one year left on his contract.
Previously, Cancelo demonstrated his commitment to Barcelona by rejecting a more lucrative offer from Inter Milan during the winter transfer window to stay at the Catalan club.
Within Barcelona, Cancelo is viewed as more than just a squad player. Following strong performances late last season, manager Hansi Flick sees him as the leading candidate for the left-back position, ahead of Alejandro Balde.
Despite financial complications, Barcelona have not abandoned their pursuit but remain cautious about overpaying or rushing the deal. The club respects Cancelo’s clear preference to wear the Barcelona shirt again and continues negotiations to find a suitable arrangement.
