Club Career

Wojciech Szczęsny is one of the most experienced Polish goalkeepers of his generation, with a career that has taken him through several top European clubs. His rise at the highest level began after joining the youth system of Arsenal in London at a young age. He made his first-team debut on September 22, 2009. In order to gain regular playing time, Szczęsny later moved on loan to Brentford, where he quickly impressed and enjoyed a strong spell. After returning to Arsenal, the Polish goalkeeper gradually established himself as the club’s first-choice keeper. During his time in England, he won two FA Cups and shared the Premier League Golden Glove award in the 2013/14 season after finishing the campaign with 16 clean sheets. That period helped turn him into a well-known figure in European football. The next major step in his career came in Italy. In 2015, Szczęsny joined Roma on loan, where he spent two seasons. The 2016/17 campaign was especially impressive, as he played all 38 Serie A matches and helped the club finish second in the league. It was in Italy that Szczęsny fully confirmed his status as a goalkeeper of high international level. In the summer of 2017, he joined Juventus. In Turin, Szczęsny was first seen as the successor to Gianluigi Buffon and later became the team’s number one goalkeeper. Over seven seasons with the club, he made 252 appearances, recorded 100 clean sheets, and won eight trophies: three Serie A titles, three Coppa Italia titles, and two Supercoppa Italiana trophies. In August 2024, Juventus officially announced the end of his time at the club. After leaving Juventus, Szczęsny briefly announced his retirement, but in the autumn of 2024 he returned to football by signing for Barcelona until the end of the season. The Catalan club later extended his contract until June 30, 2027. As a result, his career gained yet another major European chapter, this time in Spain.
