Club Career

Marc Bernal is one of the brightest young midfielders of the new generation in FC Barcelona’s system. According to the club’s official information, he was born in Berga, Catalonia, started playing for his hometown club, and then joined Barça and La Masia at the age of six. From a very early stage, he progressed quickly through the age groups and stood out because of his tactical understanding and unusual maturity for his position. The next major step in his development came with Barça Atlètic. His official player profile states that in the 2023/24 season, while still only 16 years old, Bernal became a key figure in the reserve side. He made 31 appearances, 27 as a starter, and scored twice in a match against Sestao River. The club specifically highlights that he became an important player for the team at a remarkably young age. His official first-team debut for FC Barcelona came on 17 August 2024 in the La Liga match against Valencia. At just 17 years and 84 days old, Bernal became the first player to make an official first-team debut under Hansi Flick. The club also noted that he started the match, and that his path to senior football was especially striking because he had effectively skipped part of the usual youth progression by reaching the top level so early. However, only ten days after that debut, his rapid rise was interrupted by a serious injury. In the match against Rayo Vallecano on 27 August 2024, he suffered a major left knee injury. The club later clarified that it involved an anterior cruciate ligament tear and associated damage to the external meniscus, and that his recovery lasted more than a year. Even so, Barcelona adjusted his contract in September 2024, and on 29 September 2025 officially extended it until June 2029. As of 3 April 2026, Bernal has already returned from injury and is back around the first-team environment. Official club material reported that he was declared fit in September 2025, then returned to action after 383 days, and by March 2026 Barça were already writing that he had rejoined the first team and was making a very strong impression after his comeback.
